All LESD schools will be opening in a full Distance Learning model for the 2020-21 school year. In Trimester 3 of the spring we used a Pass/No Pass grading system. LESD will return to regular grading practices for Trimester 1; however the final grade of Fail at middle school will be eliminated. Elementary grades will be at the domain level only. Citizenship grades will also be given.  At the Elementary level, the physical education and arts grade will be given in the form of a citizenship grade of Outstanding, Satisfactory, Needs Improvement or Unsatisfactory.  The commitment is to remain in this grading system until students return to being physically on campus on a regular basis.  Trimester 1 grades will be based upon student academic and citizenship performance from August 26th through November 20th.

Student academic grades are based on a student’s ability to meet the grade level performance standards.  Attendance and behavior should be reflected in the citizenship mark. Grading must consider extenuating circumstances related to COVID-19 that have affected a student’s ability to complete assignments.  Please understand that all the effects of COVID-19 in and of itself are extenuating circumstances. Schools must implement their tiered re-engagement plans per SB98 to ensure student attendance and continuity of learning. SB98 also includes requirements around documenting student contacts and communication. There must be documentation of weekly outreach to students/parents and referrals made to Community Liaisons, Counselors, or Social Workers, or Administration to show evidence that students have been contacted.

Key Factors to Consider in Final Grades:

  • Graded student work is required.

  • Teachers are required to collect assignments, monitor progress and give feedback to students and parents so that students can track their individual progress.

  • Attendance and behavior should be reflected in the citizenship grade, not the academic grade.

  • The Academic grade is based solely on the quality of the student’s academic work and their mastery of the course content based on district standards

  • Communicate with all stakeholders if there are barriers to students completing work, making significant progress, or meeting the standards of the required course.

  • Students should be given opportunities to make up assignments, be able to submit late work, and be given flexible deadlines, especially where technology glitches prevent timely participation or submission of assignments

  • Take into account the specific needs of all students; especially, Students with Disabilities, students with 504 plans, English Learners, homeless, and foster youth

  • Be cognizant of any sudden, abnormal, or significant changes in student academic achievement. It is very likely that COVID-19 circumstances have affected their academic performance. Please collaborate with administration, counselors, community liaisons, social workers to determine if there is an issue.

  • Clearly communicate criteria in coursework and grading policies to students and families

  • Consider alternative means of administering tests, projects, other assessments, and adaptations to assignments to meet the needs of students.

Please refer to Education Code 48205 and Board Policy/Administrative Regulations 6154 - Homework/Makeup Work and 5121 - Grades/Evaluation of Student Achievement for more specifics

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please contact your principal first.  Travis Collier, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services is also available to assist you.
